 Under 9 Green – 2005/06
The under 9 Greens had a fantastic season. It was successful and enjoyable for both the players and the parents highlighted by tremendous team spirit and great parent support.
It was the teams second year in the under 9’s with 10 boys having played before and 3 boys playing for the first time. The extra experience made a lot of difference as this year we only lost one game – and that was by a small margin.
The fielding and the general out cricket really developed. In the second half of the year lots of catches were taken, run outs were caused by good throws and direct hits whilst backing up started to become natural. Justin Green and Darcy Patterson really shone out as wicket keepers and Nick Wyche and Hugh Green were the greatest improvers in this area.
The bowling, still the toughest part, showed the greatest improvement. James Suttor, Jackson Karrasch, Justin Green and Dylan Santone developed into good bowlers with very few wides. Alex Watson, Harry Chapman and Darcy Baron- Hay led the attack and picked up the most wickets.
The batting progress this year was significant in many different areas. We hit a lot of boundaries, straight bats and shots through the off side started to develop and we ran more between the wickets than any other team we played. Will Gyles became a real batsman that could hit 4’s and 6’s as well as defend the straight one but even more importantly call runs aggressively. Mitchell O’Donnell hit some classic big shots and scored most of his runs in well-struck boundaries.
In the game we lost James Suttor hit 14 runs of the last 3 balls to get us within 1 of the other teams average and we started 5 behind at the start of the last pair. Whilst in our very last game we lost some early wickets and Harry Lawson and Nick Wyche saw off the opposing teams best bowlers when we needed them most. This paved the way for a great partnership of 81 ( 54 + 27 bonus) by Harry Chapman and Jackson Karrasch.
Every team member contributed in some way each week and the boys encouraged each other to do well.
Special thanks to Mike Suttor who coached mid week and Lachlan Gyles who took the team on Saturdays. Once again particular appreciation for Myles Baron – Hay who padded up and warmed up the kids every week and to John Wyche and Peter Green for scoring.
