Cricket Choir belts out the Junior Club Song

Gordon Junior Cricket Club has recorded another major first – a fantastic new club song.

A cricket choir of young Gordon players got together to record the anthem at the Royal Australian Navy Band studio at Waterloo. Set to the tune of Waltzing Matilda, the song tells of the fun of playing junior cricket for Gordon.

The brains behind the club song is Gordon’s in2Cricket co-ordinator, Mark Ham, who is also a Petty Officer at the Navy’s Director of Music's Office at Garden Island. “The kids were great - very enthusiastic and passionate,” said Mark, who joined the Navy band in 1987 as trombonist. “They were also very professional! They had it all down in about 30 minutes!” The recording was live to a track of Waltzing Matilda recorded by the official RAN Band.

Mark – who studied jazz at Sydney Conservatory and is also the National Navy Cricket Coach - said the session was a success because of a great partnership. "The Navy's current slogan is ‘The Team Works’. It was great to see our team of Gordon kids working together, in a musical sense, to get the job done.” The Waterloo studio is purpose built to suit the 56 strong band of full time professional musicians – a perfect venue for the young players to perform.

“At Gordon Juniors we're all about loving cricket and playing for fun - and this team song is a great way to spread the message.” Mark said the song is one of a number of key initiatives the club is putting together the 2011/12 season.

“We've got coaching clinics planned, a fabulous new website, better equipment and training gear,” he said. “While we do play for fun, Gordon Juniors also offer a complete pathway for kids as young as five to play for Gordon – and all the way to Grade, NSW and Australia. It all kicks off with our Back to Cricket Day this season at Beauchamp Oval, Chatswood, on 4th September.”

We play for Gordon
We play for Gordon
We play for fun under Australia's southern sun

Every ball, every run
We'll do our best 'til we are done
We play for Gordon
And we play for fun!
