Around the Grounds - Round 8 - 2011/12

Six of the Best for Gordon Hot Shots

Six wins in a row for one side, a top of the table clash for two Gordon teams and a big six to win a game were among the many the highlights of another successful and enjoyable weekend of cricket for the mighty Gordon Juniors.

The mighty U9 Reds are a side to watch for the future as they easily defeated a St Ives who were unbeaten coming into this game.

The U9 Reds bowled first and look very impressive at such a young age. Wickets tumbled as they hit the stumps, took catches and chased hard in the field in display of amazing enthusiasm. The fireworks really exploded when they batted with Charlie Cadwallader leading the way slugging two 6s and a hatful of 4s. All the Reds bats got among the runs. The Reds cruised to a comfortable victory but the most importantly, the boys are having a heap of fun.

At the other end of the age scale, our Red and Gold teams faced off in the U16/17 clash of the titans. The Reds batted first and put together 129 from their 32 overs thanks largely to Harrison Black’s 28 not out and Ryan Ludowyke’s 22. Looking for 130 to win, the Gold fell short thanks to a great bowling and fielding display by the Red players. The Gold finished on 9 for 93 at the end of the match. Charlie Stobo took 2 for 3 from four overs. The U14 Blues continued their impressive form with a good win over St Pius Green. Batting first, the Blues ran up 148 at the end of their 32 overs. Most of the batsmen were among the runs with Joshua Rizk top scoring with 24 retired not out. The Blues bowlers then rolled St Pius for 110 in the 30th over. Max Pei and Euan Cambitzi both took two wickets. The Blues share top spot on the table.

In the U13s, our Reds charged to victory with a fantastic team effort. Their opponents, Lindfield Chappell, got off to a flying start to be 2 for 68 after 10 overs. Great bowling by Jonathan Koruga, 2 for 2 from four overs, Charlie Wallace, 1 from 7 off four overs and Luke Carah, 2 for 10 from two overs, then saw a batting collapse to have them all out for 111 runs. With a great opening partnership of 79 by Charlie Wallace and Jake O'Donnell, both retired on 31, you’d have thought the Reds would do it comfortably until a mid order collapse saw them 6-105. Julian Di Ciano hit a huge six to score the winning runs after only 20 overs.

The U12 Reds are the top scorers in the Saturday AM competition and they again put on a fine batting display to defeat a Lane Cove team. Batting first they scored 146 runs with Tom Hampson, 29, and Charlie Bibb, 24 not out, the top scorers. The Reds bowlers – led superbly by Angus Chitty with the ball in the final overs - then held the Lane Cove side to 140 to win a tight match. See Match Report

The U12 Blues were in good form as they defeated Ryde Hunters Hill. Opener Kieran Dean led the way with 46 not out as the Blues put on 149 from their 32 overs. Dean then became a strong candidate for man of the match with two wickets as the Blues bowled out their opponents for 120 to record a comprehensive victory.

Elsewhere in the U12s, the Greens put up a fighting display without their leading run scorer, Raymond Su. Batting first, the Greens had many good performances with top scores from Oliver Clarke, 32 and Nicholas Moore, 29. Despite a good effort in the field, the Greens couldn’t stop their Mosman opponents from getting home. See Match Report

In the U11s, it was a tough day for our Red team. Chasing 184 to win, the Reds fought hard but could only manage 127 at the end of 30 overs. Henry Smith top scored with 13, retired not out.

Our U10 Reds stormed home with a great win. Batting first, the Reds scored 114 from their 24 overs with top scores from Lachlan Best, 23, retired not out and Ben Dowling and Matthew Di Ciano, both retired not out on 20. Leg spinner Will Hampson took two wickets.

In the U9s, there were great efforts by our Green, White and Blue team as all players continued to have fun playing cricket for Gordon Juniors.

Well done to all our Gordon Juniors!

Good luck next weekend.
